Through the team's official Twitter feed, the Tigers announced that they sent Armando Galarraga to Toledo following Tuesday night's 7-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Detroit will purchase the contract of reliever Robbie Weinhardt from Triple-A Toledo tomorrow.
This is a temporary development for Galarraga, however, as it appears the Tigers want to keep him on a regular pitching schedule. Galarraga will start July 15 for the Mud Hens, but the team says he'll pitch on July 20 for Detroit. This move also gives the Tigers more relievers to work with for a day-night doubleheader with the Indians right after the All-Star break.
Galarraga has won only once in his past six starts (since his almost-perfect game versus Cleveland), giving up four runs or more in three of his last four appearances. That's raised his ERA from 2.57 to 4.45. Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said in post-game remarks that this move was planned before Tuesday's game, however, and is not a reflection on Galarraga's recent performance.
Weinhardt is just returning from a shoulder injury that's kept him out since late May. In 19 appearances with Toledo, he's 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA, and 18 strikeouts in 27.1 innings.
