Tigers Beat White Sox, 3-2, On 9th-Inning Home Run

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Alex Avila's two-run homer in the ninth inning lifted Detroit over the Chicago White Sox, 3-2, in the middle test of a three- game set from U.S. Cellular Field.

Carlos Guillen added a solo homer for the Tigers, who have won two of three.

Phil Coke (7-2) turned in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win.

Juan Pierre and Omar Vizquel drove in a run each for the White Sox, who have dropped five of seven and slipped two games behind first-place Minnesota in the AL Central. The Twins bested Oakland, 2-0, earlier Saturday.

J.J. Putz (5-4) was saddled with the loss and a blown save after allowing Avila's game-deciding blast.
