Chris Allen Kicked Off Michigan State Basketball Team

Chris Allen's status with Michigan State has been up in the air for months, but that is no longer the case, as Tom Izzo has kicked him off the team.

"It’s been no secret that Chris Allen’s been in a tenuous position since spring,” Izzo said. “There were multiple obligations that Chris had to meet in order to return for his senior season. While he did make progress through the summer, he has failed to meet all the obligations and will not be a part of our program this fall.

"I know he’s going to be a great player. He deserves another chance to play basketball somewhere, but it’s in everyone’s best interest that it be somewhere other than Michigan State. Like every player, he has to mature a little bit. I think a year away from the game will be beneficial for his development as a person and a player.”

Allen had this to say about Izzo's decision:

“Coach was straightforward with me about what I needed to do to remain a part of the team,” Allen said in the statement. “Unfortunately, I didn’t meet all the obligations. I have enjoyed my time at Michigan State and I appreciate all the support from my fans, and everyone associated with the program.

“It’s unfortunate things didn’t work out, but I’m leaving on good terms with my teammates and coaches.”

Although Izzo decided it was best for Allen to leave the team, he is apparently trying to help him find a new home. In fact, it looks like Allen could end up at South Florida, where he would play for former MSU assistant Stan Heath. From Jim Comparoni:

I expect Chris Allen to transfer to South Florida. Izzo spoke with Stan Heath about Allen possibly moving on to USF last month. Amicable.

As for MSU, I doubt losing Allen will affect them too much. Does is hurt to lose talent and experience? No doubt. But MSU has so much talent from top to bottom on their roster that I don't think this will make a big difference in what the Spartans accomplish next season. With Allen or without Allen, they are still a favorite to win the national title in my mind.
