Brett Favre Will Play If He's Healthy

24 hours ago, Brett Favre was set to retire after supposedly sending texts to teammates telling them that he was done. Lions fans were busy celebrating that Favre was finally going to leave the NFC North for good and make the Vikings a much more beatable team, and the rest of the sports world thought this saga had finally come to an end.

The one problem yesterday was that Favre himself never said anything about the subject. In fact, he didn't comment on until today, and now the story has shifted from retirement to this:

Favre denied sending text messages to Vikings teammates and club officials that might have indicated he had decided to retire.

Favre told ESPN that he has decided to play for Minnesota in 2010 if his surgically repaired ankle heals but said the fact he has not been able to decide his future reflects his level of concern about regaining his health.

It's possible that Favre will end up retiring, but I'd bet he returns. Either way, I'd like to know how a story can be so misreported. ESPN ran with the story that Favre was set to retire but didn't even bother to get a comment from him until today. As we now know, Favre hasn't decided yet because he is still trying to figure out if his ankle will allow him to play. If it heals, then Favre will be back for yet another season.
