The final round of roster cuts is set to take place this coming Saturday. The roster cuts always produce a few surprises, and this year isn't expected to be any different with so many battles going on for spots on the team.
One of those battles for the Lions is at running back, where Kevin Smith is fighting to make the team with the likes of Maurice Morris, Aaron Brown and DeDe Dorsey. Although Smith is only in his third year and was the Lions' starter last year, his spot is by no means guaranteed. Jim Schwartz had this to say when asked about his status:
"I don't know," coach Jim Schwartz said Tuesday. "I'll cross that bridge when we get there. I don't know that there's very many people that have 100% earned a spot."
That is some serious coach speak, but it reaffirms that Smith doesn't have a spot on lockdown. I would still personally be surprised if the Lions end up releasing him because he is talented, but like I said earlier, surprises are a common theme with the final round of roster cuts.
