(Sports Network) - The Chicago White Sox' playoff hopes grow dimmer by the day. Tonight, they just try to get a win, as they attempt to avoid a sweep in their three-game series with the Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field.
Chicago fell even further back of the Minnesota Twins in the American League Central on Saturday, as Scott Sizemore belted a pinch-hit, three-run homer in the eighth inning, lifting Detroit to a 6-3 win.
The Tigers have not swept a three-game set in the Windy City since April 6-8, 2001.
Will Rhymes had an RBI double for Detroit and scored on a two-run single by Ryan Raburn. All of the runs scored by the Tigers came with two outs.
Detroit starter Justin Verlander (17-8) gave up three runs on six hits and struck out eight while tossing his third complete game of the season.
Mark Teahen went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the White Sox, who have lost a season-high five straight games and nine of 11 overall. Rookie Lucas Harrell, making his third career start, did not figure in the decision after he allowed three runs on eight hits over five innings.
Chicago now trails the Twins by 10 games in the division, as Minnesota beat Oakland on Saturday.
With the score even at three, Sergio Santos (2-1) was on the hill to begin the eighth for the White Sox and retired the first two batters. He was lifted in favor of Chris Sale after Alex Avila and Austin Jackson hit consecutive singles. Sizemore greeted the young lefty by crushing an 0-1 pitch over the left-field wall.
"I blew the game. It sucks," Sale said. "I've just got to bounce back and be ready for tomorrow."
Tonight, Chicago will turn to lefty John Danks, as he tries to snap a personal two-start losing streak. Danks fell for the third time in his last four starts on Tuesday against Minnesota, as the Twins reached him for four runs and nine hits in seven innings, dropping him to 13-11 to go along with a 3.60 earned run average.
Danks has allowed seven homers in his last six starts, after allowing one in his previous eight.
Danks lost to the Tigers two starts ago and is 3-4 against them with a 3.52 ERA in 10 starts.
Detroit, meanwhile, will pin its hopes on righty Jeremy Bonderman, who is 8-9 with a 5.04 ERA. Bonderman did not get a decision on Tuesday in Texas and allowed four runs (three earned) and six hits in five innings of an 11-4 loss.
Bonderman beat Danks and the White Sox on September 8 and is 7-11 lifetime against them with a 4/55 ERA in 19 starts.
The White Sox have lost nine of their 17 meetings with Detroit so far this season, losing seven of the last eight bouts between the teams.
