The Big Ten announced its awards for the first week of the season on Monday, and Michigan State running back Le'Veon Bell was named the Freshman of the Week.
↵This is apparently the first time an award has been given out to freshman on a week-by-week basis by the Big Ten. Usually players are honored as being the offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, but this year they added an award for freshmen.
↵Interestingly, Bell shared the award with Penn State quarterback Robert Bolden, who is from Michigan and chose the Nittany Lions over the Spartans. He picked up the award for his solid debut at Penn State, whereas Bell was honored for his record-setting day that included 141 yards and two touchdowns on only 10 carries.
