The Detroit Tigers lost their first game of the spring today, suffering a 6-3 defeat at the hands of the Houston Astros. The final score nearly ended up being 6-1, but the Tigers added two runs in the ninth inning to make things look a little more respectable.
Phil Coke went three innings for the Tigers and suffered the loss in this game. He only gave up one earned run, though. Jose Valverde was responsible for one of the earned runs as well, and Jose Ortega gave up four in two innings.
J.A. Happ picked up the win for the Astros, going two innings and allowing only one hit. Four Houston pitchers earned holds in this game, and all six Astros pitchers that appeared went one or two innings exactly.
The Tigers' three runs came off the bats of Alex Avila, Scott Thorman and Clete Thomas, who had two runs batted in. Miguel Cabrera had three plate appearances but failed to register a hit, leaving one man on base in the process.
Tomorrow the Tigers will take on the Braves at 1:05 p.m. The game will be shown live on ESPN, so if you haven't had a chance to watch any Tigers spring training games yet, this will be a good opportunity to do just that.
