Michigan High Schooler Wes Leonard Dies After Making Game-Winning Shot

Fennville High School's Wes Leonard had just made a layup to give his team a 57-55 victory over Bridgman in overtime. Fans rushed the court and players were celebrating the victory. Then everything came to a tragic halt.

Leonard collapsed on the court shortly after the end of the game and was rushed to Holland Hospital. There, he was pronounced dead an hour and 20 minutes after arriving. The cause of death is unknown at this time, and right now there is no information available about when an autopsy will be conducted.

Leonard was a two-sport star for Fennville. He racked up more than 1,000 points during his basketball career, and he led the football team to the second round of the playoffs. As Fennville's quarterback, he received an all-state honorable mention.

The game-winning shot by Leonard on Thursday gave Fennville a perfect 20-0 record for the regular season. Districts are scheduled to begin on Monday, although it's unclear if they will proceed as scheduled in the wake of this tragic news.
