On Friday, Inside Lacrosse reported that the Michigan athletic department was planning an announcement about its lacrosse program. Specifically, Inside Lacrosse reported that the men's Michigan lacrosse team would be elevated from club status to a Division I program in time for the 2012 season. It was also reported that the women's program would move to DI in 2013.
↵Great Lax State received this comment from the Michigan athletic department about the report:
↵↵↵We are exploring our options but no decision has been made.
↵
As Great Lax State went on to explain, it's really only a matter of time until everything becomes official and an announcement is made. Inside Lacrosse said that a formal announcement "may be as much as a month away," so I would imagine Michigan is simply getting everything in order before making things official.
↵This move has been in the making for a few years now with all of the success the program has had on the club level in recent years. Once Dave Brandon became the athletic director last year, it seemed that it a move to varsity status was inevitable, and now it looks like we are closing in on an announcement.
