Michigan To Announce Addition Of Varsity Lacrosse On Wednesday

After building the most dominant club lacrosse team in the nation, Michigan is finally ready to make the jump to varsity status.

In a move that has been years in the making, athletic director Dave Brandon is going to make the official announcement at a Wednesday press conference in Ann Arbor. The announcement will include the news that both men's and women's lacrosse will be added as varsity sports.

For the last few months there has been a whole lot of smoke surrounding this story. The cat was let out of the bag some time ago that Michigan would be adding a D1 lacrosse program, but only now is the athletic department ready to announce the move and likely share the specifics of the upgrade to varsity status.

We will learn much more about the details surrounding the new varsity sports on Wednesday, but John Niyo already reported that the men's lacrosse team will go varsity next season. The women's team won't make the move until 2012, giving the program another year to prepare for the change.

As far as where the teams will play their games and things like that, we will have to wait until Brandon's presser for more details.
