Thanks to a 2-1 victory over the Twins and the Indians’ 7-3 win over the White Sox on Sunday, the Tigers’ magic number to clinching is now seven! Taste it?
↵It’s also the uniform number nine-time All-Star and Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews wore in his two years with the Tigers.
↵Mathews was traded to the Tigers in August of 1967 as a fading 35-year-old power hitter, who enjoyed several very successful seasons with the Boston/Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves.
↵Mathews only played in 67 games during his short stint with the Tigers and was released after the World Series in 1968. Mathews started one game at third base in that World Series and recorded a hit and an error.
↵Mathews is tied with Ernie Banks on the all-time HR list with 512. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978. Ty Cobb once said about Mathews, “I’ve known three or four perfect swings in my time. This boy’s got one of them.”
