The New York Yankees lost Game 1 of the American League Championship Series to the Detroit Tigers Saturday in 12 innings, but the team's more significant loss was shortstop Derek Jeter.

Jeter fractured his left ankle while trying to field a ground ball hit by Jhonny Peralta in the 12th inning. The Yankees had scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at four and force extra innings.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi told ESPN New York that Jeter will likely be out three months recovering, but that the injury is not career-threatening to the 38-year-old. General manager Brian Cashman said that it is unknown at this point whether or not Jeter will need surgery.

Teammate Andy Pettitte told ESPN New York that once Jeter, who rarely misses games, went down, it was clear something was seriously wrong:

"For him to lay down on that field, I knew something was broke or torn completely," said Game 1 starter and fellow Yankees veteran Andy Pettitte. "When I saw him not get up, I knew he was done, really. That doesn't surprise me at all."

After the game, Girardi announced the Yankees would add Eduardo Nunez to the roster to take Jeter's spot. Nunez, an error-prone shortstop, hit .292 this year and stole 11 bases. Meanwhile Jayson Nix is expected to fill the starting role. He hit .243 this season with four home runs and 18 RBI.
