The Michigan Wolverines and Michigan State Spartans are two of five Big Ten teams to make the USA Today preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll, including the top-ranked Indiana Hoosiers.
Michigan comes in at No. 5 after a 2011-2012 campaign which saw the Wolverines finish as Big Ten co-champions and qualify as four-seed in the NCAA Tournament. Big Ten Freshman of the Year Trey Burke, as voted by the media, highlights a returning roster that includes third-team All-Big Ten guard Tim Hardaway Jr.
Burke and Hardaway Jr. will be supported by a highly acclaimed recruiting class. Glenn Robinson III and Mitch McGary are expected to contribute immediately for the Wolverines.
Michigan State is ranked No. 14 in the initial polls following an Sweet Sixteen run last season. The Spartans lost Big Ten Player of the Year Draymond Green, but with the return of guard Keith Appling, the addition of freshman shooting guard Gary Harris and head coach Tom Izzo still at the helm, Michigan State looks poised to compete in the Big Ten once again.
The Indiana Hoosiers and Ohio State Buckeyes join the Wolverines in the top five at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively. The Wisconsin Badgers also made the list at No. 21.
