The Detroit Tigers hired Bruce Fields to be their minor league hitting coordinator on Thursday. Fields was the Tigers hitting coach from 2002 through 2005 and also served as a bench coach with the Tigers for part of the 2005 season. Former Tigers minor league hitting coordinator, Toby Harrah, will remain the assistant hitting coach for the Tigers, a role he has held since June.
Fields has been a member of the Cleveland Indians organization for the past seven seasons. Most recently he served as the Indians hitting coach from June 2011 through the end of the 2012 season.
The Tigers drafted Fields in 1978 and he spent most of his playing career in the minor leagues. After retiring Fields began coaching in the Tigers organization. He managed the Single-A West Michigan Whitecaps from 1997 to 2000 and served as the manager of the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens from 2000 to 2002 before becoming the Tigers hitting coach.
