St. Cloud State vs. Michigan State final score: Spartans shoot poorly, but win 62-49

The Michigan State Spartans beat the St. Cloud State Huskies 62-49 Friday in the team's final exhibition game before opening the season next Friday against UConn.

Michigan State shot poorly from just about everywhere on the court — the Spartans made just 42 percent of their field goals, 23 percent of their 3-pointers and 52 percent of their free throws. Derrick Nix led the team with 14 points and seven rebounds, Keith Appling had 13 points and four assists, Adreian Payne had 11 points and 11 rebounds and freshman Gary Harris also scored 11.

Branden Dawson, who is recovering from a serious knee injury sustained late last season, scored four points with five rebounds and two steals, but he fouled out in 23 minutes.

Connor Niehaus was the only St. Cloud State player in double figures with 10.

Michigan State played without freshman Matt Costello and sophomore Brandan Kearney, who both sat out with injuries.
