Maria Sharapova (Russia) won a first-set tiebreaker over Tsvetana Pironkova (Bulgaria), and Serena Williams (US) is knocking on the door with a six games to one lead in the first set over Melinda Czink (Hungary).
On the men's side, Rafael Nadal (Spain) is taking on Lukas Rosol (Czech Republic) at 9 a.m. Eastern.
In other second-round action, Detroit native Michael Russell was ousted by Julien Benneteau (France). Russell also lost his doubles match; he was paired with Donald Young.
