On Wednesday afternoon, No. 4 seeded Andy Murray was upset by No. 6 David Ferrer in the quarterfinals of the 2012 French Open, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2. Ferrer will now play in his first ever semifinal matchup at Roland Garros where he will have to meet the imposing six-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal on Friday in an all-Spanish matchup. This is Ferrer's third career grand slam semifinal appearance.
Murray's loss snapped a streak of five consecutive appearances in the semifinal round of major events. The match was interrupted by rain, which delayed the contest for a half-hour in the third set. Despite the break, Ferrer played a disciplined game that saw him break serve 10 times and only commit 32 unforced errors, which was 27 less than Murray committed.
