2012 French Open Results: Maria Sharapova Defeats Sara Errani To Win Women's Singles Tournament

No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova defeated no. 24 seed Sara Errani on Saturday, winning the 2012 Frech Open Women's Singles tournament. Sharapova won the first set 6-3 and the second 6-2, closing out the win with an ace.

The match was not as lopsided as the score might indicate; Errani, already a doubles champion at Roland Garros, did put up a fight. Ultimately, though, she was undone by the power and relentless pace of Sharapova. The Russian was also significantly bigger and with a wider wingspand than the Italian, and Sharapove used that size to her advantage in returning everything Errani could muster.

With the victory Sharapova became only the 10th woman to collect a career Grand Slam of all four tennis majors.
