On Monday afternoon, Roger Federer advanced to the Quarterfinals round of the 2012 Wimbledon Tournament by defeating Xavier Malisse, 7-6 (1), 6-1, 4-6, 6-3. This is now the 33rd consecutive time that Federer has reached the quarterfinal round of a Grand Slam event, and he accomplished all this with an injured back.
Federer needed to take an off-the-court medical timeout in order to tend to the injury, which required an eight minute delay that had spectators wondering whether he could return.
Ultimately, the injury had no effect, as he returned to form and eliminated Malisse with relative ease.
Federer's next opponent will be Mikhail Youzhny, who edged Denis Istomin, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 7-5, in a match scheduled for Wednesday. Federer is 13-0 all-time against Youzhny.
