Tigers Vs. Yankees: Back-To-Back Homers In 8th Propel New York To Win

A 3-2 lead quickly evaporated for the Detroit Tigers in the eighth inning when Joaquin Benoit gave up back-to-back solo home runs to Mark Teixeira and Eric Chavez. The New York Yankees held on to the 4-3 lead for the win.

Benoit's struggles ruined what had been a good day for Doug Fister. The Tigers' starter gave up two runs on eight hits before being removed with one out in the seventh inning.

The Tigers scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning when Alex Avila hit a two-run home run and Andy Dirks hit an RBI double.

The ninth inning almost included a Detroit comeback, as the Tigers had runners on first and third with no one out, but Rafael Soriano retired the next three batters in order to notch the save.

Detroit now heads to Texas for a three-game series with the Rangers.
