Michigan is just about done with its 2013 football recruiting class, and it added commit No. 1 for 2014 on Wednesday. According to Tom VanHaaren, Ohio linebacker Michael Ferns committed to the Wolverines on Wednesday, and he decided to make the news public on Thursday.
Ferns reportedly came close to committing to Michigan during its BBQ at the Big House event a couple weeks ago. He decided to hold off on deciding, and now he is officially the first commit of 2014 for the Wolverines.
Although most 2014 recruits are unrated, Ferns already has four stars on 24/7 Sports. He is ranked 94th in the nation on 24/7 Sports, fifth at inside linebacker and fifth in the state of Ohio. OhioPreps has Ferns ranked second in the state of Ohio.
Ferns, who chose Michigan over Notre Dame and Penn State, has a lengthy offer list. In addition to those three schools, Rivals reports that Ferns has offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Purdue, Stanford, Virginia and Wisconsin, among other schools.
