Detroit Lions Reportedly Over NFL's Salary Cap

The Detroit Lions will have to make some moves with their roster, as they're over the NFL's salary cap. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Lions are approximately $700,000 over the roster cap, along with the Houston Texans and New York Giants. Here's what Schefter had to say in his Tweet below:

Houston, Detroit and N.Y. Giants are all roughly $700,000 over NFL's salary cap, according to league source. Houston can take their cap exception from the Redskins and Cowboys and get under the cap, but the Giants and Lions will have to make a move or restructure contracts to get under cap. They have until Wednesday to do it.

That's just two days to get back under the salary cap, but this is just news to everyone else, not the Lions. They've got their own books and surely have been working on the problem. As noted, the team needs to move somebody or restructure a contract, which seems like the more likely option at this point.

Prior to the start of the 2012 league year, the Lions restructured some contracts to make sure they were under the salary cap, and it's likely they'll be able to do something like that again. Trading or releasing a player is likely a last resort for them.
