Michigan State Spartans freshman Monty Madaris is battling for time at the wide receiver position at training camp. The Cincinnati Moeller product was regarded as one of the best at his position in his high school class and wants to be able to learn on the job immediately at the NCAA level, via Brian Calloway of Lansing State Journal:

"It means everything," Madaris said of the opportunity at receiver. "That's my dream. That's why I came to Michigan State is to play. Football is basically my life right now."
...
"We have a couple of upperclassmen and right now I'm just learning from them," Madaris said. "I've got to learn the plays. The older receivers, they really are my mentors right now with learning the offense."

Madaris has lots of competition and head coach Mark Dantonio is not tipping his hand as to which direction he's leaning just yet.

The Detroit Tigers' six-game winning streak is over, as they lost to the New York Yankees 12-8 on Wednesday. Detroit rallied back from a 7-0 deficit, but it was not enough.

New York scored two runs in the first off of RBI-singles from Eric Chavez and Curtis Granderson. Granderson extended the lead to 5-0 with a three-run home run in the third. A Nick Swisher single and a Mark Teixeira sac fly made it 7-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Brennan Boesch singled in a run in the fourth and a single from Jeff Baker scored two in the sixth to make it 7-3.

In the seventh, Ichiro Suzuki's RBI-single gave the Yankees a five-run lead. That lead was cut to just one after a huge bottom of the inning for Detroit.

Austin Jackson scored on a Prince Fielder groundout, then Miguel Cabrera scored on an Andy Dirks single. Brennan Boesch's infield single scored Delmon Young, then Alex Avila's single drove in Dirks. This made it 8-7.

New York extended their lead to 10-7 in the top of the eighth, first with an RBI-single from Teixeira and then with Robinson Cano scoring on a Chavez groundout.

Omar Infante's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth made it 10-8. Jayson Nix scored on a Brayan Villarreal balk and Cano drove in Jeter with a single to make it 12-8 in the ninth and that's how it would stay.

Anibal Sanchez got the loss for Detroit. He pitched three innings, gave up seven hits and seven earned runs and struck out two.

C.C. Sabathia pitched six and two-thirds innings, gave up eight hits, five runs (three earned) and struck out seven for the win.

The fourth and final game of the series will be played on Thursday, first pitch at 1:05 p.m. ET at Comerica Park.

ESPN released its 2012-2013 "College GameDay" basketball schedule on Wednesday and it will feature the Michigan Wolverines on February 2 when they play against the Indiana Hoosiers in Bloomington, Indiana.

One person who should be happy about this news: Jalen Rose. The ex-Wolverine, who had been working as an NBA analyst for ESPN, was recently added to the basketball "College GameDay" crew as a full-time panelist. He will also work as a game analyst on a selection of games throughout the season.

Other key matchups on the "College GameDay" schedule include the show's first trip to Butler's Hinkle Fieldhouse on January 19, Missouri's visit to Kentucky's Rupp Arena on February 23 and a wild doubleheader on March 9. On the last "College GameDay" of the season, Rose and the crew will start the day in Washington for Syracuse/Georgetown and then travel to Chapel Hill for Duke/North Carolina.

The Detroit Tigers are looking to get their seventh win in a row on Wednesday night against the New York Yankees, but so far it isn't looking good. Heading into the fifth inning, they are down 7-1.

The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off of RBI-singles from Eric Chavez and Curtis Granderson.

Granderson extended that lead to 5-0 in the third inning with a home run that scored Chavez and Robinson Cano.

The Yankees made it 7-0 in the fourth with an RBI-single by Nick Swisher followed by a Mark Teixeira sac fly.

Both benches were warned, as three batters have already been hit -- Teixeira and Prince Fielder in the first, then Robinson Cano in the third.

Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez was pulled for Duane Below after Swisher's RBI-single. He gave up seven hits and seven earned runs and struck out two in three innings.

Brennan Boesch cut the lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Michigan Wolverines opened their training camp on Monday and it appears a new version of Denard Robinson showed up.

This Robinson, a senior, is more vocal on the field, embracing a leadership role, via Dave Hogg of Fox Sports Detroit:

"Denard's really picked it up," [Roy] Roundtree said after Michigan's first fall practice. "He's a lot more vocal than he has been in the past. You can actually hear him now."
…
"I think we've seen Denard step up as a leader since the spring," Michigan coach Brady Hoke said Monday. "His maturity level is high, and even though we are just one day in, he did a really nice job today of getting the offense where it needed to be, and calling plays in the huddle. There's more confidence this year."

It's a continuation of what was first seen at Big Ten Media Days last week, when Robinson delivered a heartfelt speech about his family and his journey to U-M.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander was "angry" before he went and struck out a career-high-tying 14 New York Yankees at Comerica Park on Monday night.

Going into the game, he'd lost his last two starts. Against the Cleveland Indians, he gave up six hits and four runs in the seventh inning. Against the Boston Red Sox, he gave up four runs in the fourth inning. Verlander knew he had to be better against New York, via David Mayo of mlive.com:

"Two in a row with big innings, teams stringing together hits, that's not like me," Verlander said. "So I knew that there needed to be something changed."

He went to pitching coach Jeff Jones and asked for help.

"I feel like after one, sometimes, it's OK, just kind of throw it aside, didn't pitch well," Verlander said. "I feel like if two happens, it's starting to begin a pattern, maybe something's not right. That's the way I felt.

"So after this last loss, I went to Jeff and said, 'Hey, we need to figure out what's a little off here and fix it.' So we did a little look-back and compared to some old video and found a couple things that we thought were off and fixed them."

Verlander's amazing night vaulted him past George Mullin for sixth-most career strikeouts in Tigers history, at 1381.

Brazil's Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti pulled off an upset victory in the Men's Gymnastics Rings final on Monday, capturing his country's first medal of the 2012 Olympic Games.

Zanetti finished with 15.900 points, enough to beat silver medal winner Chen Yibing of China, who had 15.800 points.

Chen -- the "Lord of the Rings" -- was the favorite, as he won gold in Beijing and was also the winner of four of the last five world titles.

Italy's Matteo Morandi won bronze with a score of 17.733.

It's not as if Chen performed poorly, but Zanetti managed to be just slightly better on this particular da, via The Associated Press:

Going last, Zanetti was just a little stronger. When he did an iron cross, suspended in the air with his arms extended, even some fans winced. He held his strength positions for what seemed like hours, the only sign of exertion was the bulging veins in his arms and neck. He had a small step on his dismount, but it hardly mattered.

Just slight flaws kept Chen from another gold.
