Detroit Lions Sign Don Carey Following Recent Tryout, According To Report

The Detroit Lions have reportedly signed cornerback Don Carey. Carey spent last season as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Don Carey recently worked out for the Detroit Lions front office as the cornerback looked for his next opportunity after being released by the Jacksonville Jaguars prior to the start of the season. The workout apparently went well, too, as the Lions elected to sign the free agent on Tuesday.

Carey won't be a stranger to Michigan as he was born in Grand Rapids before eventually moving to Virginia and spending his college career at Norfolk State before being drafted in the sixth round by the Cleveland Browns in 2009. After spending his rookie year on the injured reserve, Carey played in 15 games for the Jacksonville last season before being a roster-cut casualty.

The Lions haven't officially announced the move so it's unclear who Carey is replacing on the roster, but Pride of Detroit has a guess.

It's not known who Carey is replacing on the roster, but my guess is Vincent Fuller. Fuller was signed prior to the Monday night game against the Chicago Bears as safety depth when injuries were piling up at the position. He has been injured the last couple weeks, and my guess is the Lions placed him on injured reserve or released him to create room on the roster for Carey.

Carey probably won't be a difference-maker for Detroit, but depth in the defensive backfield is never a bad thing.
