The latest batch of NFL playoff scenarios doesn't include anything about the Detroit Lions. This is because they have already wrapped up a playoff spot and aren't still in contention for the NFC North title. The only thing in question for the Lions as we look ahead to the final week of the season is what seed they will be in the NFC.
Currently, the Lions are the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoff picture. If the Atlanta Falcons lose on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints, that will remain the case and the Lions will be able to clinch the No. 5 seed on Sunday with a win against the Green Bay Packers or a loss by the Falcons against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
If the Falcons are victorious against the Saints, they will stay at No. 5 in the NFC for now. It would take a Lions victory next Sunday and a Falcons loss for Detroit to move up to the fifth seed if Atlanta wins on Monday night, so it's a safe bet that Lions fans are rooting for New Orleans.
Although Lions fans will definitely take making the playoffs regardless of the seed, getting to fifth in the NFC playoff picture would give the team a better chance of advancing out of the wild-card round. The fifth seed will get to go up against the NFC East champion, which will be the winner of Sunday's game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys. The sixth seed could play at the San Francisco 49ers or Saints. Whichever team emerges from the NFC East would provide a better matchup for the Lions, especially when you consider Detroit has already defeated the Cowboys on the road earlier this season.
