2011 NFL Mock Draft: Tyron Smith To The Detroit Lions?

SB Nation has released its first 2011 NFL mock draft since the NFL Combine came to an end on Tuesday. This edition takes what happened in Indianapolis into account and interestingly vaults Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert to the No. 1 pick. He didn't work out in Indianapolis, but I guess the feeling is Cam Newton isn't worthy of the top pick and the Carolina Panthers need a franchise QB. I guess we shall see how that plays out in the coming months.

For the Detroit Lions, they are now predicted to select USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith. While it remains to be seen which offensive tackle will emerge as the top dog at this position, it does seem more and more likely that a lineman will be the pick. None of the linebackers that would be available seem worthy of the 13th pick, and the same goes for the cornerbacks. Unless Prince Amukamara somehow falls to the Lions, which is highly unlikely, it does seem like an offensive tackle could be the pick.

If the Lions do end up taking a tackle, it's likely that he would be on the sideline for much or all of the 2011 season. Barring an injury, the Lions' offensive line seems to be set as far as starters go, especially at tackle. A rookie OT could compete with Gosder Cherilus for the starting spot at right tackle, but I don't see Jeff Backus being unseated.
