With the No. 85 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions have selected Dwight Bentley, cornerback from the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns. These NFL Draft 2012 results confirm the projection for Bentley, whom many scouts and evaluators feel was a second or third round selection.
Bentley was a four-year starter at ULL and really caught the eye of NFL scouts his senior year in 2011. He put together a spectacular season, recording 71 tackles, 5 tackles for a loss and 3 interceptions. Bentley also displays the athleticism at the cornerback position the NFL looks for, but is a little light at only about 185 pounds. He also displays return ability with the football in his hands, returning two of his interceptions for touchdowns.
The Lions' next pick is the No. 117 pick in the fourth round. Many expected the Lions to select a cornerback at some point in the draft. The Lions were ranked No. 22 in the NFL in pass defense last year and needed to boost the secondary to match the strong defensive line. The hope is that Bentley will be able to do that.
