ESPY Awards 2012: Justin Verlander, Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson Among The Nominees

The ESPY Awards are just around the corner, with the award ceremony set to take place on July 11 with host Rob Riggle. The awards are an annual event in which athletes and teams are given awards for their achievements throughout their respective seasons. They're not quite as huge a deal as they might like just yet, but it's still an honor to stand up and be recognized as the best of the best.

Detroit has had it pretty well-off this past year. Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions and Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers both graced the covers of video games for their sports, and both won other awards on top of that. Now, the both of them are up for ESPY awards, as well.

Verlander is up for the most prestigious award (or rather, one of the two most prestigious) on the night as he's going for Best Male Athlete. He's got some stuff competition, though. Johnson is up for best NFL player, while his teammate Matthew Stafford is up for best comeback athlete. As noted by the Detroit Free Press, Grand Rapids native Floyd Mayweather Jr. is up for Best Fighter, while Kalamazoo native Derek Jeter is up for Best Moment for his 3,000th career hit.
