Originally it looked like both Justin Abdelkader and Todd Bertuzzi would be able to overcome their injuries and play in the Red Wings' season opener on Friday, but it's possible both players could miss the game.
Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said forward Justin Abdelkader won't play in Friday's regular season opener against Anaheim at Joe Louis Arena due to a rib injury.
Forward Todd Bertuzzi (sore back) practiced with the team Thursday for the first time in a week, but his status won't be determined until after Friday's morning skate.
Abdelkader is dealing with a rib cartilage injury, so at the very least he will be out this weekend. Bertuzzi's issue has to do with lower-back problems, but it sounds like they are improving.
If Bertuzzi is unable to go on Friday and the Wings need an extra forward, Kirk Maltby will be called up, which is interesting considering he is apparently leaning toward retiring.
