Questionable Call Helps Ducks Top Red Wings

Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan beat Detroit goaltender Jimmy Howard on a penalty shot in overtime to lift the Ducks to a 2-1 victory over the Red Wings.

Ryan came off the Ducks bench and took a stretch pass that resulted in a breakaway, drawing a questionable hooking call on Detroit’s Ruslan Salei. Salei fell as he scrambled to catch Ryan, making contact on the left arm of the Ducks winger.

Nevertheless, Perry came in with some good speed and beat Howard on the glove side with a wrist shot. Howard was visibly upset with the call, breaking his stick over the cross bar after letting in the goal.

Pavel Datsyuk scored on the power play in the first period, banking in a shot off the left pad of Ducks goalie Dan Ellis from behind the net to give Detroit a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately it would be the only tally with the man advantage for the Red Wings, who went 1-for-9 on the power play.

Jason Blake tied the game 1:54 into the third, firing a slap shot past a screened Howard after the Ducks picked up a turnover in the neutral zone.

Howard finished with 26 saves for Detroit, which lost for the first time on the road in seven tries. Ellis stopped 28 shots for the Ducks.
