Johan Franzen Taken Off Ice After Face-First Smash Into Boards

Detroit Red Wings forward Johan Franzen was taken off the ice early in the first period of Game 2 of their playoff series versus the Phoenix Coyotes. Franzen went into the boards face-first after getting shoved from behind by the Coyotes’ Shane Doan at the 16:30 mark.

Play was stopped while trainers checked out Franzen. The hit appeared to have reopened a cut on Franzen’s nose and blood needed to be scraped off the ice. (Of course, there’s also a possibility that Franzen suffered a broken nose after his face met the boards.)

No penalty was called on the play. Though Franzen went into the boards awkwardly and could have suffered a head or neck injury (his head bent back a bit on the collision), it looked like a clean hit by Doan.

Franzen was taken off the ice by trainers and looked rather shaken up. No word as of yet on his status as Game 2 is midway through the first period with a scoreless tie.
