Red Wings Sign 2009 Draft Pick Adam Almqvist

On Friday, the Detroit Red Wings inked defenseman Adam Almqvist to a three-year entry-level deal. Almqvist was the Red Wings' seventh-round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, and Detroit is hoping he can eventually become yet another late-round steal and great player from Sweden to suit up in the red and white.

Almqvist has played both junior hockey in Sweden and in the Swedish Elite League (Elitserien) in recent years. In 2009-10, Almqvist played 15 games in the junior league, 28 regular season games in the SEL and 16 more in the playoffs for HV71, his SEL team. He scored two goals and recorded six assists in the regular season for HV71 and one goal and 10 assists in the postseason.

In 2010-11, Almqvist played 52 games for HV71 in the SEL. He didn't score any goals, but he did record 16 assists. In the playoffs, Almqvist only played in two games and didn't record any goals or assists.
