Red Wings Assistant Paul MacLean Interviews With Senators

The Detroit Red Wings already have one opening on their coaching staff after parting ways with Brad McCrimmon. He decided to leave to "pursue other career opportunities," and already he has been hired to be the head coach of a team in the KHL.

Now it's possible Red Wings assistant Paul MacLean could be leaving this offseason as well. MacLean has an extension on the table if he wants to return to the Red Wings, but he interviewed with the Ottawa Senators for their head coaching job earlier this week. There's no indication of how likely it is for MacLean to get the job, but it's certainly possible the Wings will have two vacancies on the coaching staff to fill.

Ansar Khan reports that Detroit is already identifying candidates to fill McCrimmon's spot on the coaching staff. Khan says that some of the potential candidates are looking at head coaching jobs of their own, but Detroit has also asked for permission to speak with an unnamed coach who was recently fired.

With MacLean in the running for the Sens job and assistant candidates looking at other head coaching jobs, it appears the Red Wings will have to wait for the head coaching jobs to be filled before they can finalize their staff for next season.
