The Detroit Red Wings are going to announce their two new assistant coaches on Friday, according to Ken Holland. The search has been on since the team parted ways with Brad McCrimmon and saw Paul MacLean get hired as the Ottawa Senators' head coach.
↵Already one of the new assistants has leaked out. Jeff Blashill, who confirmed earlier this week he had interviewed for one of the assistant jobs, has already resigned from his position as Western Michigan's head hockey coach. WMU announced the news in a release on Friday morning.
↵↵↵Western Michigan head hockey coach Jeff Blashill has resigned his position with Western Michigan University on Friday morning, effective immediately, to take an assistant coaching position with the Detroit Red Wings of the NHL.
↵
Blashill said in the release that this is all very emotional for him and he is "extremely excited for the opportunity to pursue a lifelong dream to coach in the NHL with the best organization in sports."
↵After being hired a year ago and taking Western Michigan to the NCAA tournament in his first season, I'm sure Blashill hoped he would someday coach in the NHL. I doubt he ever expected it to happen this fast and for him to end up with the Red Wings, but next season he will be one of the two new assistants to coach under Mike Babcock.
