With an assist in each period Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings was an important catalyst in helping Team Chara defeat team Alfredsson in the 2012 NHL All-Star Game in Ottawa. Datsyuk twice assists on goals for Marian Gaborik, who had three goals and an assist. Gaborik took home game MVP honors in helping Team Chara win the event.
The Red Wings' second representative, goaltender Jimmy Howard, started the game and played the entire first period. He gave up only three goals on 14 shots and evens topped the second penalty shot in NHL All-Star Game History. Howard stopped Steven Stamkos in the first period after hte game's only penalty.
Team Chara took the game over with an offensive explosion that featured four of the final five goals in the game. Marian Hossa and Zdeno Chara scored within 16 seconds of each other to put Team Chara in front at 10-8 with just under eight minutes left to play.
