Paterson is from Ontario and has been playing hockey in Michigan with the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL. Last season, he played in 42 games and had a goals against average of 3.42 and a save percentage of 0.904. He had one shutout during the 2011-12 season. A season earlier, he appeared in only five games with Saginaw and had a GAA of 2.97 and a save percentage of 0.907.
The Red Wings obviously don't have a hole at goalie with Jimmy Howard set to be their starter for the foreseeable future, but it never hurts to add some depth for the future.
The Red Wings will go back on the clock with the 110th overall pick (fourth round).
