SB Nation Detroit's Free Marketing Idea For The Detroit Tigers

New, 3 comments

Spring Training has begun for the Detroit Tigers in Lakeland, with pitchers and catchers reporting for workouts at the beginning of the week.

Position players report on Friday, which will only add to the excitement. For instance, how long will Magglio Ordonez be wearing his hair? But after that first week or two, Spring Training settles down a bit. Sure, there will be some position battles to follow. Who will win the second base job? How about left field? Seventh man in the bullpen? Last spot on the bench? The next six weeks will not be boring in Tiger Town.

However, it's really all about Opening Day, right? The Tigers demonstrated that on the day trucks were packed up for the trip down to Lakeland when Paws showed this sign to cameras:

I like the people in the Tigers' marketing department. With Ron Wade and Ellen Hill Zeringue leading the way, they do a fine job in promoting the team and have embraced social media creatively. That's why I want to offer an idea.

How about Photoshopping this image of Paws in front of various Detroit landmarks? The Spirit of Detroit, for example. Or the fountain in Hart Plaza? This could be extended throughout the state of Michigan, as well. The Mackinac Bridge, perhaps. The Sparty statue in East Lansing. Etc., etc. Something like Samara Pearlstein did with her cartoon Ugueth Urbina.

I'd love to get it started, but I have no Photoshop talents. (Maybe because I don't actually have Photoshop.) But you, dear reader, might have the necessary abilities. And I'm sure the Tigers' marketing department does, as well.

So let's do this! Opening Day at Comerica Park is approximately eight weeks away. Let's see Paws and his April 8 sign all over the state of Michigan.
