I don't know what it is about three-run homers, but they have haunted the Detroit Tigers quite a bit in this young season. On Opening Day last Thursday, the New York Yankees' Mark Teixeira hit a three-run blast that helped his team win the season-opening game. On Saturday, Teixeira hit another three-run homer, and Russell Martin also had one en route to a 10-6 win for the Yankees.
There were no three-run shots during Sunday's win for the Tigers against New York, but the Baltimore Orioles had one today. Baltimore's Brian Roberts hit the three-run shot during the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie. Baltimore added another run later in the inning and never looked back, going on to win by a score of 5-1. The victory gives Baltimore a 4-0 record to start the season, whereas the Tigers are now 1-3.
Rick Porcello took the loss in this game. He lasted only five innings, and all five runs he gave up were earned. He struck out four batters and had one walk during his five innings of work.
For Baltimore, Jake Arrieta picked up the win. He pitched six innings and gave up only six hits. The one run he allowed was on a Will Rhymes single in the third inning to score Brandon Inge.
The Tigers and Orioles have Tuesday off before resuming the series on Wednesday. Both the game on Wednesday and the game on Thursday will be 7:05 p.m. starts.
