After the Tiger signed Prince Fielder, general manager Dave Dombrowski stressed that the team could find its fifth starter amongst its young crop of arms despite the rumors that swirled throughout the offseason that the Tigers were looking elsewhere.
According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports, though, the team is still reportedly interested in acquiring a potential fifth starter:
The Tigers are continuing to show interest in Nationals pitcher John Lannan, sources said.
Hmm. Either the Tigers aren't satisfied with what they're seeing from the youngsters thus far or the Tigers were intent on seeking an outside arm all along and Dombrowski's comments were to get the kids to compete.
Lannan, 27, had a 3.70 ERA and a 1.5 WHIP last season. Over five years, he has a career 4.00 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. He is set to make $5 million this year.
