The Detroit Tigers dropped their first game of the season, surrendering four runs in the ninth inning and falling, 4-2, to the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday.
Justin Verlander took a one-hitter into the ninth inning before giving up three hits and throwing a wild pitch, getting tagged for four runs in the inning and taking the loss.
Miguel Cabrera had another good day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI single.
Ben Zobrist singled in the final two runs for Tampa Bay. James Shields earned the win for the Rays, pitching eight innings and allowing six hits and two runs.
Detroit dropped to 4-1 with their first loss, while Tampa Bay improved to 4-1 with the win. The two teams square off again on Thursday at 1:05 p.m. EST.
