Thomas made the opening day roster as a utility outfielder but didn't expect to see much playing time. After being designated for assignment, Thomas' time with the Tigers is likely finished.
Smyly is a 22-year old lefty drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the second round of the 2010 MLB Draft. He earned the fifth spot in the Tigers rotation with a solid showing in the spring. Smyly began last season in Single-A Lakeland before moving up to Double-A Erie, registering a 4-3 record with an ERA of 1.18.
