The Detroit Tigers finished second place in the Grapefruit League with a record of 20-8, behind only the 24-7 Toronto Blue Jays.
Tigers power hitters Miguel Cabrera (.413, 2 HR, 9 RBI), Delmon Young (.381, 6 HR, 21 RBI) and Prince Fielder (.288, 4HR, 11 RBI) all hit well in the spring, bringing high expectations to Detroit.
Justin Verlander, the Tigers Opening Day starter, went 2-0 with a 2.02 ERA in 26.2 innings in Grapefruit League play. Doug Fister also pitched well for Detroit, going 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA. He pitched 19.2 innings, surrendering only 14 hits and six earned runs.
The Tigers open play on Thursday at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. Jon Lester will be the Opening Day starter for Boston.
