Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander gave up a shut out but was able to minimize the damage by the St. Louis Cardinals in the top of the sixth as the Tigers took a 5-1 lead into the home half of the sixth.
Matt Holliday grounded out to first to score the only St. Louis run, then Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina hit a two-out shot to center field but Austin Jackson was able to snag liner and strand two base runners in the process.
Verlander looked strong through five innings and it appeared the Tigers gave him more than enough run support early after Delmon Young knocked in Miguel Cabrera in the first inning. Jackson then came through with a two-run double as part of a three-run second inning.
St. Louis starter Lance Lynn left the game after giving up five runs in five innings.
