Jake Thompson didn't hold anything back in his debut for the Gulf Coast League Tigers, just 17 days after Detroit made him their top overall selection in this year's draft.
In fact, the 18-year-old Thompson recorded six strikeouts in four innings of work on Friday. He only allowed one hit and walked just one, while facing 13 hitters on the night. Although Thompson admitted to a bit of nervousness, he still took the business approach to what was clearly his biggest baseball moment yet.
"I took my same game plan that I always use, but that morning I felt it," Thompson said Saturday to Chris Iott. "But once game time rolled around, I was fine."
Third-round pick Austin Schotts has also started well for the Gulf Coast League Tigers, so far going 6-for-15 (.400) with three doubles, four RBI and a 1.012 OPS.
