Tigers Vs. Yankees: Detroit Tries To Take Weekend Series From New York

The Detroit Tigers (25-28) will settle their weekend series with the New York Yankees (28-24) on Sunday after the two teams split the first two games of the series.

Rick Porcello gave Detroit a strong start on the mound Saturday which the Tigers hope to build on with ace Justin Verlander scheduled to start on Sunday. Verlander is 5-3 on the season with a 2.55 ERA, but the hard-throwing, right-hander picked up two of those three losses in his last two outing.

A little run support wouldn't hurt, so the Tigers will look to third baseman Miguel Cabrera to continue his tear at the plate. Cabrera hit two solo home runs on Saturday and has three multi-hit games in the team's last four games, going 10 for 19 during that stretch.

The Yankees will try to slow down Cabrera and the Detroit offense with right-hander Phil Hughes. Hughes has a 4-5 record after ten starts with a 5.64 ERA.

The game is scheduled to start at 1:05 p.m. and will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit.
