On the second day of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Detroit Tigers selected right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson with overall pick No. 91. The selection is the Tigers first of this year's draft. Thompson is a six-foot-four, 235 pound player out of Texas who is capable of throwing in the lower-90s in addition to having a power bat.
Here is his scouting profile on MLB.com:
This Texas high schooler is definitely an imposing force. Thompson has a fastball that sits in the low 90s with good movement. His slider also has good bite to it and could end up being his best pitch. His changeup needs work, but that is not uncommon for prep pitchers.
Despite his impressive power at the plate, he is projected to be a pitcher at the next level. While he is currently committed to play at Texas Christian University in the fall, it is believed that he is a signable prospect who will chose the pros over college.
