Tiger fans were treated to the good version of Max Scherzer on Thursday, as a strong pitching performance led to a 5-1 Tigers win — giving Detroit its third straight series win.
Scherzer allowed one earned run on three hits over seven innings, striking out nine and picking up his ninth win of the season.
Jhonny Peralta opened the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning to score Prince Fielder. That was followed by a two-run homer to left field to give Detroit a 3-0 lead. Danny Worth drove in a run in the fourth with a double, and Miguel Cabrera homered in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Angels' lone run came on a solo homer by Mike Trout in the sixth inning. Joaquin Benoit and Jose Valverde each threw a perfect inning to close things out.
The Tigers have won 10 of their last 12 and will welcome the first place White Sox to Detroit on Friday.
