Tigers Vs. Twins: Duane Below To Make First Start Of Season In Place Of Max Scherzer

Reliever Duane Below has been thrust into the Detroit Tigers rotation to cover for would-be Tuesday starter Max Scherzer, who was scratched with a sore hamstring.

The Tigers, who lost 3-0 Monday to the Minnesota Twins, made some roster moves to ensure that they have enough arms to withstand the shuffling.

Scherzer, 7-5 with a 4.98 ERA, is expected to start Sunday.

Below, 2-1, has appeared in 21 games this season but has yet to start. He has a 2.70 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 33.1 innings. He started two games last season, giving up five runs in 9.2 innings.

The Tigers head into the All-Star Break with seven straight home games against the division's two worst teams -- the current four-game set with last-place Minnesota and then a three-game series with the second-to-last-place Kansas City Royals.

The Tigers are currently 3.5 back of the division-leading Chicago White Sox.

First pitch Tuesday is set for 7:05 Eastern.
