Tigers To Start Drew Smyly In Place Of Doug Fister On Saturday

The Detroit Tigers have moved starting pitcher Doug Fister out of his rotation spot for Saturday's game against the Los Angles Angels, replacing Fister with left-hander Drew Smyly.

Fister is dealing with a groin injury that he suffered in last Sunday's start, and it apparently hasn't healed enough for him to make his next start. The Tigers are expected to recall Smyly from AAA Toledo on Friday and not right away, which could mean that Fister's injury isn't too serious that he needs to be placed on the disabled list to open a roster spot.

Smyly, a rookie who made his major-league debut this season, was 4-3 with a 4.22 earned run average for the Tigers through July 6, the last time he made a major-league start before being sent down. He gave up a home run about every seven innings and struck out 75 compared to 21 walks when with the Tigers earlier in the year.
